The Story Behind Exordium

If you're like me, the first time you saw or heard ‘‘Exordium”, you probably thought (or even said aloud): WTF?! You'll be happy to know there is a whole story behind it, as it really isn't a common word used in the English language these days.

Let's start with the definition:

· Exordium (noun), the beginning of anything.

Pretty fitting for a first pattern, the first product to be out in the world from me as a quilt pattern designer, wouldn't you say?

Now on to the backstory. Exordium was the registered name of one of my horses. A side note here, if you're familiar with any animal registrations, you'll know that the registered name isn't what you actually call the animal on a daily basis, so she’s more commonly referred to as Genesis.

You'll notice I used the past tense; she unfortunately passed away unexpectedly this summer. It was a very hard loss of a young and wonderful member of our family, and having to re-explain to a 3-year old who doesn't understand the concept of death why we can't go visit our horse anymore is heart wrenching. So the naming of the pattern in her honour, especially with the meaning behind the name, seemed fitting.

The timing of the release (March 17, 2022) is also significant, as it would have been her 11th birthday. Even though she was born on St Patrick's day, she was not blessed with the luck of the Irish. She was unsuccessful as a race horse, she wasn't keen on being a show horse, and she always had the worst luck when it related to anything medical. But she was the absolute sweetest horse, always a barn favourite, and had an opportunity to just enjoy life as a spoiled horse grazing in large fields for her last years. She was loved beyond measure by so many, and will be missed.
